First Things, First....

Before you can have a website you must first register / obtain a domain name, this will be the name, the "address"  of your website.  It is also what people will type into their browser that they might visit your website on the World Wide Web.

For example, a site name / address could be: www.yourcompanyname.com …or you might also choose from .org, .net  or others that are available.

Domain Name Registration

Your "domain name" must be registered---something that can be done through several online (via internet sites) registries. Average cost for domain registration is $10 -15 annually. Domain names can be registered for 1 or more years at a time. You can register the name yourself or we can assist you for a nominal flat fee; note that when registering your domain name, you will have to provide specific personal contact information about yourself and, at some point before launching your site, information provided by your web "server" host.

NOTE:  If you have a second party register your domain name make sure you understand ALL the details of how they will proceed with that transaction.  It is VERY important that your personal name and/or business name be listed as the "owner" or "applicant" on the application and account.  Too often, the second party that registers the name lists their name (not yours!) in the "owner/applicant" location.  When this happens, they retain control of the domain name and can charge you for just about anything related to the domain name including renewal, switching to different server computers, changing contact info, etc.  Second party's also often "over charge," when handling this procedure.  Get prices up front.

When assisting clients with registering domain names,
Limestone9 Consulting will ALWAYS list clients as the owner, and will provide username and password to access the registry site immediately upon the completion of the process.  Limestone9 Consulting suggests the services of www.godaddy.com or www.dotster.com  These companies have proven to be fair in price and with good customer service.

Web Host Server

Once construction has begun on your site, at some point, it will need to be installed into the "world wide web."  But first, a rental or lease contract will need to be established with an Internet Service Provider.   Again, this is the location (the computer) where your web site will be stored and accessed by visitors. Limestone9 Consulting can assist you in contacting a reliable server provider.

NOTE:  You will discover that server costs (generally paid monthly) vary between companies that provide this service.  If you are taking care of securing a company that provides this service...shop around and ask questions.  Be wary of second party providers who offer to register your domain name and provide server space, as well.  Though there are many reputable companies, some are not. These companies will take advantage of your lack of knowledge and you could find yourself being over charged for the amount of server space you need.

Limestone9 Consulting websites can be associated with most all server providers.  However, if you have not yet secured a provider, We can recommend companies who have proven to be reliable and fair to their customers.  Limestone9 Consulting often recommends www.kcnet.com; and in north central Kansas,
www.NCKCN.com (where available). Sometimes, for smaller sites, Limestone9 Consulting leases server space, as well.  Depending on the provider and or the size of your site, expect to pay approximately $10 to $20 per month.  If you find something cheaper, beware of needed add-ons and hidden expenses.
